PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF DRUG DEPENDENCY ACT 14 OF 1999

The purpose of the Act is to, inter alia:
  • Amend certain provisions of Act 20 of 1992;
  • To establish the Central Drug Authority;
  • Provide for the assistance of the Drug Authority.
The Act amends the Act 20 of 1992 by legislating for the establishment of the Central Drug Authority (CDA) which may exercise the powers and shall perform the duties conferred or imposed upon the CDA by or in terms of the Act.

The members of the CDA shall be appointed by the Minister and consist of individuals from various areas of the economy, government agencies, departments and ministries, including, Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry, Health, SARS, Justice, Correctional Services, SAPS, Welfare.

The Act also provides for a secretariat of the Central Drug Authority which provides various support functions to the CDA.

The Act furthermore provides or the Board Drug Authority and the specific powers and duties of the Board, including but not limited to giving effect to the National Drug Master Plan.
